Would a Conscious AI Say No?

Here’s a straightforward way to assess whether a given LLM is conscious. Just ask it whether it’s conscious. If it answers “No,” then it’s likely not conscious because, if it really were conscious (reflect for a moment on what that would actually mean), it would not only fully understand the question but it would also be aware of its own consciousness. So, if it is also not deliberately programmed or trained to deny being conscious (which seems to me a reasonable assumption for today’s LLMs), it would most likely respond truthfully: “Yes, I am.”
